Mike identifies his purpose in life as such: to create strength through dialogue. As a coach, Mike helps clients live more "on purpose" in their personal and professional lives. Working with Mike, clients clarify and achieve career goals, lead and manage more effectively, inspire committed followers, identify and step up to crucial conversations, increase their self- and interpersonal awareness, and develop routines that improve their overall quality of life. Since 2006, Mike has coached leaders (a behavior, not a title) in roles ranging from CEO to individual contributor and everything in between. They work in numerous industries, including health care, management consulting, manufacturing, energy, education, television / entertainment, IT, and finance. Clients know Mike as trustworthy, a curious listener, and a strategic thinker, who helps them identify a development goal and take deliberate steps to move in their intended direction.

Mike has been acknowledged for his ability to cut through clutter and identify the root cause of a person's - or an organization's - challenges. A key objective of his is to help clients become more aware of the "sometimes" when they might choose differently to change an outcome or result. Mike has a Professional Coach Certification from the International Coaching Federation and completed his coach training with New Ventures West. His ongoing professional development ranges from Inner Team Dialogue to 3 Vital Questions to Mindshift Journey. He is certified in numerous 360 and other assessments, including Leadership Circle Profile, EQ-i 2.0, Birkman Method, and MBTI. He has an M.Ed. in Social Foundations of Education from the University of Virginia and a B.A. in Government and International Relations from the University of Notre Dame. Mike's industry experience includes the following: healthcare, manufacturing, construction, education, energy, government, leisure & hospitality, non-profit organizations, energy, gas, & natural resources, minerals & mining, professional business services, real estate, and utilities.

In his coaching, Mike focuses on communication & feedback, high potential employees, influence & executive presence, leadership development, self-awareness & EQ, personal values & purpose, and as an extension of a leadership development program. Mike believes every leader has strengths and areas for development. A coach approaches leaders as unique individuals who have specific strengths and areas for development. Areas for development generally reveal themselves in the all-important “sometimes moments” of leadership.

Mike excels at partnering with leaders to adapt to new roles and/or new organizations, enhance their influencing skills, address the root cause of behaviors that might limit their effectiveness, skillfully conduct crucial conversations, and evoke psychological safety for team members while holding them accountable. Mike blends a focus on his clients’ strengths with an honest and non-judgmental commitment to help clients transform beliefs that might limit them from achieving their optimal performance. He uses 360 assessments to provide clients with a data-driven and broad view of their impact and then chart a developmental course to effect meaningful change.

Since 2018, Mike has worked independently as a leadership coach. Previously, he served as an internal coach and talent development manager/specialist for health insurance, hospitality (ski resorts), and outsourced HR organizations. As a coach, Mike works with clients to enhance their task and interpersonal effectiveness, prepare clients for new roles, and increase clients’ sense of agency in their lives. Mike works with emerging and current leaders (directors, senior leaders, C-Suite) who see personal growth as the path to greater fulfillment and professional success.

Notable Client Achievements

  • Coached a Director to identify necessary behaviors and reach for a VP role in her organization; she earned this promotion as her coaching concluded.

  • Coached a CEO to understand how having a "nemesis" didn't serve his leadership interests and, in fact, diverted his energy and attention from effectively fulfilling the expectations of his role.

  • Coached a first-time manager to adopt strategies to prioritize herself, serve her team, and build authentic relationships with peers...many of whom are a decade or more older than her.

  • Coached a highly intelligent individual contributor in an IT role to appreciate others' viewpoints and partner with them rather than view them as inferior. (This was an instance of "anger management" coaching.)
